Hiking Mt. Leavitt

A little bit about the peak before we begin. If you've hiked Mount Diablo located in northern California, you can definitely hike this one. If Mount Diablo is a 10 on difficulty for you, this one is like a six.

If Mount Diablo is a six for you, this one's like a two.

My hiking buddy thought entirely opposite, So we decided….if you're trained in elevation, this will matter.

Here's a few recommendations:

Prepare for the elements we came on A clear day. No clouds in the sky and there was a light wind. It was a little cold at the top.

Garmin does not show the actual trail well. At least most of it

Alltrails shows a majority of the trail. There are still moments you do get off the trail but you can weeble your way back.

(If you don't have your hydration and nutrition down and you have no elevation, do not even show up to the parking lot. You're going to turn back within the first 3 miles. You'll hit the bowl most likely but will not hit the peak..)

Let's begin the hike:

Stage 1

Park at the pass

About 10th of a mile up. You have to make your own trail.

Do a little bit a hill climb

Straight up the peak as the osprey flies is the direction. You may not see the trail. Just keep looking you'll find it.

Once you get on the trail Stay on the trail eastbound towards the peak.

Southeast of where the sun rises, you'll see the trail again.

After a little bit more hill climb it flattens out and you'll notice shells on the ground to verify your location.

1 hour exactly. 1,000 ft in elevation

From 9,6666 to 10666

Stage 2

10,840

You'll see the emmigrant wilderness sign

You'll hit a valley with a meadow to the west. Beautiful waterfall

You will drop down on the trail and it drops elevation

To go back up

Approximately 3 mi in there's a water hole with fresh melt

On the right side of the pct trail (congratulations! You're on the Pacific Crest trail)

Take your time and enjoy the PCT section

Walking this a little Get ready to see the view!!!!!

You're at the end of stage 2!!!! Great job!

Stage 3

We met raspberry! Start in Mexico in April 19 2023 she was doing most of the Pacific Crest trail and having a blast. The main quote she left us with was “When I finish this I then have to start thinking about what I'm going to do next.” We quickly realized that is our problem as well. She told us that this year,

“50 out of 4,500 made the pass”

Okay, back on the hiking…

3 and 3/4 mi in you can come across water pouring out of a creek * pending snow mount

At latopie lake there is camping available it's in this next section, the trail disappears. However, if you weavel your way up towards the peak, you'll start to see the switchbacks. If you're keeping on the PCT trail, go up the switchbacks if you're going to Mt Leavitt don't go out the switchbacks and start going west towards the point. (You'll understand where you're at when you get there.)

Stage 4

The final stage. Now you're headed up to the peak.

Buckle in this one's fun. Make sure you take a left towards the side of the hill. Where did you get to the bowl in front of Levitt? There's a small trail that's marked it'll take a minute to find it.

Straight up the ridge.

There is no clear cut trail that we could see around So stay on the ridge line.

Elevation hits you quick. We started hitting 100 steps at a time.

At 11,300 I discovered I no longer can call myself a bull down the mountain. I've reached mountain goat status!!! New level achieved!

The last climb is a scramble!

Enjoy the view you made it!

Feel free to contact us before you go if you have any questions about the hike. We would be happy to help.
